What Type of Boiler Do I Need?

There are three main domestic types of boilers. These are:

  • Combination boilers
  • Conventional boilers
  • System boilers

Below, we'll walk you through the main features of each one and give you the information you need to help you decide which one is right for you and your family.

Combination Boilers

Combination boilers remove the need for a separate hot water tank as they generate both heat and hot water from a single unit, making them the most compact option. Combi boilers are connected to the cold mains water supply and burn fuel to heat water on demand.

Combi boilers are space-saving and allow for instant heating of hot water, as you don't have to wait for a tank to heat up. They're a great option for cheaper maintenance and energy efficiency but aren't the best option if you need hot water in multiple places in the home at once, as they rely on mains pressure and a gravity-fed system.

Conventional Boilers

Conventional boilers are also known as 'heat-only' boilers and heat water which then gets pumped into a connected storage tank. This then flows into your radiators or taps when you switch them on.

Conventional boilers are a great option for you if you need multiple streams of hot water in your home at once as they don't rely on the need for high pressure from your mains water supply like combi boilers do. However, a downside of them includes the fact that hot water isn't always available on demand and you may have to wait for it to heat up or refill when it's all been used.

System Boilers

System boilers are similar to conventional boilers and also require a separate water cylinder but contain slightly different components.

They don't take up as much space as a conventional boiler and make for a quick and easy installation, however, aren't a great option if you have low mains water pressure, which system boilers rely on in the same way that combi boilers do.
